Meet the Herd

Joey
The horse who started it all, Joey is a big personality packed into a little body. His journey started with Laura almost 20 years ago, when he was just a yearling. Since then, he has brought joy to many doing therapy work at various facilities in the Triad.

Bella
Bella came into Laura’s life as a yearling when Laura was 13 years old. As most equine professionals will tell you, pairing a green horse with a green human rarely leads to good outcomes! Despite the odds, Laura and Bella have been together ever since and enjoy endurance riding and playing at liberty. Bella’s athletic, opinionated personality make her a favorite around the farm and she serves as a constant source of learning and inspiration for Laura

Gem
One of Laura’s personal horses, Gem is a long-term resident of Bushel Barns and can be found doing many jobs around the farm. From teaching riding lessons to ponying young horses to assisting with clinics, Gem is a special girl. Though she is now in her late twenties, she likes having a job & continues to teach Laura some of the more subtle intricacies of horse behavior.

Squirrel
One of the first untouched mustangs to arrive at Bushel Barns, this stocky mare has quickly adjusted to domesticated life. After being rounded up as a three year old in Utah, she ended up in a kill pen in Oklahoma. She has come a long way since then and will be a resident of Bushel Barns for the foreseeable future as she learns more about living with humans!

Kelpie
The second of the first two untouched mustangs to arrive at Bushel Barns, this little mare has come a long way since arriving at the end of 2020. After being rounded up as a three year old in Utah, she ended up in a kill pen in Oklahoma before coming to Bushel Barns. Kelpie is athletic and curious, making her a perfect fit for trail riding!

Callie
Callie is a Mustang who spent her first decade or more wild in Oregon, before being adopted by someone who was unable to gentle her and eventually surrendered her to Laura. While she's still skeptical of the human world, her owner is happy to deal with her quirks!

Merida
I adopted Merida in 2019 after she had been rescued by HERO. she came to me with little interest in humans and defensive and always running on adrenaline. We have built an amazing connection since then and she has learned to find trust in humans again. She loves her treats and begs for them at any given moment! She has a funny personality that I absolutely adore. Merida makes me laugh every single day. Especially when looking for those treats! She also enjoys when we go out for walks, where she can eat fresh grass and search for acorns. Merida is my heart and soul and came into my life during a time when I really needed her. And I think she knew that. I couldn't be more grateful.

Savannah
Savannah is a 10 year old Oldenburg mare. She was misunderstood and disrespected for most of her life, so her dominant personality quickly turned to aggression. With a lot of love, respect, and reinforcing boundaries between humans and herself, Savannah is comfortable and confident in her environment and is learning how to have a trusting and respectful relationship with people. She loves ALL food, head scratches, warm drinking water, and her blankets on cold nights. She also loves children and cats!

Von
This gentle giant is a 9 year old OTT Apendix Quarter Horse who will absolutely try to climb into your pocket. After proving he can't keep up with his illustrious pedigree of Triple Crown winner Gallant Fox, Native Dancer and several AQHA racing champions among others, Von has found his calling in English Pleasure and trail riding - and treats. Lots and lots of treats.

Kid
A 32 year old retired quarter horse show horse, Kid has taken his owner from local 4H shows to IBHA world competitions throughout his career. Even with one eye, he was bringing home ribbon after ribbon and happy to do so. While he likes to act senile, he is rather sweet and loves a good scratch!
